Holm Oak – Quercus ilex
Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) plants are seed-propagated and grown in a range of forms, including standard trees, bushes, conical forms and pleached trees.
Standard Holm Oaks are field-grown for four years, starting from 200 cm young trees (whips). They are then lifted from the field, transferred to containers and allowed to establish before sale.
This production cycle provides the following sizes:
- Girth 8–10 cm – 45-litre container
- Girth 10–12 cm – 55-litre container
- Girth 12–14 cm – 55-litre container
- Girth 14–16 cm – 90-litre container
For girths above 16 cm, trees with an initial girth of 10–12 cm are field-grown for a further four to five years. They are then lifted with a root ball, transferred to containers and established for at least one full growing season before sale.
Available sizes include:
- Girth 16–18 cm – 130-litre container
- Girth 18–20 cm – 150-litre container
- Girth 20–25 cm – 180-litre container
- Girth 25–30 cm – 180-litre container
Bush and conical Holm Oaks are also field-grown for four years. They are then lifted and transferred to containers, where they are established for a further two years.
Available sizes include:
- Bush form, height 200–250 cm – 90-litre container
- Bush/conical form, height 250–300 cm – 130-litre container
- Bush/conical form, height 300+ cm – 150/180-litre container
- Multi-stem form, height 300+ cm – 230-litre container
- Pleached plants(espalier-trained) are also available with a girth of 10–14 cm.
Please note: our Quercus ilex are not kept in the field for more than five years before lifting and subsequent container establishment.
