Boxwood - (Buxus sempervirens)

The genus Buxus includes about 30 evergreen species of shrubs or small trees. Small, petal-less flowers are produced in spring, with both male and female flowers appearing on the same plant (monoecious).

These species are widely cultivated and used for hedges, borders, walkways, and container planting, adapting easily to various soil types in both shady and sunny locations.

The species B. sempervirens is the common boxwood, which can be grown as a shrub or small standard tree. It produces abundant, dense foliage with small, leathery, dark green leaves.

In recent years, a major issue affecting this species is the box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis). For this reason, we recommend considering alternative substitute species, such as Myrsine africana or Ilex crenata (both offering leaves, growth habits, and appearances similar to boxwood).
